In the United Kingdom there is no state register of sworn translators. Instead, UK authorities ask for a certified translation: a complete translation accompanied by a signed statement from the translation company confirming that it is a true and accurate translation of the original, with the date and the translator's full name and contact details. This is the format the Home Office asks for in visa and immigration applications, and it is widely accepted by HM Passport Office, courts, universities, the NHS, banks and employers.
Documents going abroad follow different rules. Many countries, including France, Poland, Spain and Italy, expect a sworn translation made by a translator registered in that country, sometimes with an apostille. Is a certified translation the same as a sworn translation?
Not exactly. In the UK, a certified translation is certified by the translation company with a signed statement of accuracy. A sworn translation is made by a translator appointed by a court or ministry in another country. If your document is going abroad, tell us the country and we will provide the form that country requires.
Will the Home Office accept your translations?
Yes. Our certified translations include the confirmation of accuracy, the date and the translator's full name and contact details that the Home Office requires for visa, settlement and citizenship applications.
Do you need the original document?
Usually not. A clear scan or photo of every page, including the back if it carries stamps, is enough for most certified translations. We tell you if an authority or a legalisation step requires the original.
