An apostille is a certificate attached to a public document that confirms the signature, seal or stamp on it is genuine. Countries that have signed the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention accept an apostilled UK document without any further embassy legalisation. In the UK, apostilles are issued by the Legalisation Office of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), for documents from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Not every document can be apostilled as it stands. Birth, marriage and death certificates must be original certified copies from the register office; private documents such as degree certificates, company documents or translations usually need to be certified by a UK solicitor or notary public first. We check your documents, arrange that certification when it is needed, submit them to the FCDO and return them to you by tracked post. Where a document qualifies, an electronic apostille can also be obtained.
Often an apostille is only one step. The destination may also ask for a translation, sometimes of the apostille itself. We plan the order of the steps so that everything is accepted the first time.

Which countries accept an apostille?
All countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention, which includes all EU member states, the United States, Australia, India, China, Brazil and many others. For countries outside the Convention, embassy legalisation is needed instead.
Can my university degree be apostilled?
Yes, once a UK solicitor or notary has certified it as a true copy of the original. We arrange that certification and the apostille together.
Can a translation be apostilled?
Yes. A certified translation can be signed before a solicitor or notary and then apostilled. Some countries prefer the original document to be apostilled first and then translated in the destination country, so ask us before you order.
